I love a good race. The good hearted people. Positive atmosphere. Athletes giving it their all to hit a new PR.
They’re just great.
My mom had never been in a race of any kind before, and I felt like this was the perfect one to get her feet wet. It was the Run, White and Blue 5k and Mile Walk. We chose the mile, and we were so happy we did – it was 95* and hot enough to make the devil sigh.
This race benefited the Delaware Technical Community College Owens Campus Scholarships for Veterans and First Responders – who wouldn’t want to support that?! All the branches of the military set up shop with demonstrations, vehicles, service members, and even a helicopter. I mean the whole nine yards.
After walking 3/4 of a mile to get our t shirts and bibs, I ran into my Spanish teacher from 12th grade. He not only remembered my name and my Spanish name, but my best friend from high school and HIS Spanish name. It’s been 15 years, people. Teachers are special humans.
To walk back to my car, my mom and I kind of cheated and weaved our way through the school to avoid being outside longer than we had to. At this point, the race hadn’t even started and we already had walked almost 2 miles. So after we got the bibs and t shirts situated, we hopped in the car and drove over to a parking space that was closer to the finish line.
A race on elections day at a poll made the parking situation a little hairy.
After almost an hour of walking around in late summer heat, they lined us up and began the pre race ceremony. A veteran who served in WW1 and at Normandy was the honorary runner for the race which was really amazing to see. She sat in a wheelchair next to the announcer: old yet fierce.
After the ceremony and a few words from the director, they tucked us behind the group of runners and off we went. It seemed to go by quickly considering we had just done laps around campus. It wound out and around the school, down a back road and looped back into parking lot where we began. It seemed like a lot of work for a 20 minute walk but it was fun.
There’s nothing like being surrounded by a group of people who are there for the same mission.
Now that summer is winding down and fall is gearing up, I’ll have my eye on all the 5k’s in our area. Are you from Sussex County, DE too?!
Head to http://races2run.com/ and find yourself some races to join!
It doesn’t matter how slow you go, as long as you finish.
